Biographical Note

Little information is known about Frank Jacob Smith. He was born on 19 October 1877 in Austin, Texas to Benjamin H. Smith, a shoemaker, and Susan Maria Smith who were from Maryland. His siblings were Harry and Bessie. He lived at 804 San Antonio Street in Austin. He registered for the draft on September 12, 1918 and again in 1942. On census records his occupation is listed as 'clerk.' He died on 22 November 1962. He is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Austin.

Scope and Contents

Album pages with 98 photographs and 4 loose photographs document the family and friends of Frank J. Smith in and around Austin, Texas from 1913 to 1917. Individuals are not identified but locations and years are given. Snapshots show candid scenes of young adults in Austin, Texas along the Colorado River, at Wooldridge Square Park, in fields of bluebonnets; at the Capitol grounds; in New Braunfels, Tex.; in Arcadia, Tex.; swimming in Galveston; and at the Alamo and other locations in San Antonio. The family's house at 804 San Antonio Street appears in some images. Some family scenes in Maryland are included as well as travel scenes at Mount Vernon, in Arlington, Virginia, and in Washington, D.C. A military parade in Austin in 1917 is at the end of the album.

Arrangement

The photographs are arranged in the album in chronological order. They were numbered in that order 001-098; loose photos were placed at the end of the album and numbered 099-102.

The album does not have its original cover, and may not be a complete set of pages. For preservation purposes a cover was made for it using acid-free cardstock. The pages are very brittle.
