Scope and Contents

Two unrelated albums with 308 photographs document residents in Austin, Texas in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The creators of the albums and people depicted in the albums are unknown.

Album #53 contains 80 photographic portraits from the 1860s and 1870s. Most of the sitters are unidentified. One photograph is signed "Your friend Leanna Eilers." Another portrait of a woman is inscribed on the back, "With love to Constance from Emilie, Austin, March 26, 1876." One portrait of a woman is identified as "Bettie." One portrait of a man is inscribed on the back, "Eduard Fritshe!!!, Bruder Hasburger!, New Braunfels, Texas, November 28th, 1866." All of the photographs are carte-de-visite format. Most of the photographers were from the Austin, Texas area, including H.R. Marks and H.B. Hillyer. Other photographers are from San Antonio, Houston, New Orleans, Brooklyn, and Boston. Traveling photographer M.C. Ragsdale is also represented.

Album #58 contains 224 photos plus 4 loose photographs of candid scenes of young men and women in Austin from approximately 1910-1915. The people are pictured in informal portraits in parks or in front of houses or taking part in leisure activities such as boating or picnicking. No identifications or dates are given, except in a few photographs a young woman is labelled "me" and a man is labelled "Will." Locations are not identified, but many places in Austin are recognizable. Locations depicted include Wooldridge Park and the surrounding houses, the Bremond House at 700 Guadalupe Street, and the Austin Dam during reconstruction. There is one photograph (#58-183) of an African American maid or servant. The loose photographs with the album are formal portraits of women from a slightly later period (circa 1915-1930s).

The photographs in both albums provide good examples of the clothing and dress from their respective time periods.

Albums are listed in album number order. Photographs in the albums were numbered in order.
