Administrative History

"Neighborhoods: Looking at Austin in 1986" began as a summer workshop with seven photographers at St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas. The project was led by Bill Kennedy, a photography professor at St. Edward's. Other participating photographers were Ave Bonar, Michelle Campbell, Keith Dannemiller, Larry Kolvoord, Steve Martin, and Sybil Miller. Each photographer was given the freedom to choose a community or neighborhood to document. Underrepresented neighborhoods or communities which were not well known were emphasized. Some photographers chose the neighborhoods where they lived. The project included essays and narratives about the seven chosen neighborhoods, written by Michelle Campbell, Elaine Davenport, Sybil Miller, Ray Reece, Clayton Stromberger, Robyn Turner, and Rosalee Winegate. The photographs resulting from the workshop were exhibited at the Moody Atrium Gallery at St. Edward's from March 21 to April 10, 1986. The collection of photographs was presented to the Austin History Center following the exhibit to commemorate the centennial of the University.

William J. "Bill" Kennedy is an Associate Professor of Photocommunications at St. Edward's University. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Journalism and his Master's in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Texas at Austin, in 1974 and 1981 respectively. He has taught workshops for the Maine Photographic Workshops, the Santa Fe Workshops, the California Arts Institute, Anderson Ranch, the Royal Photographic Society of Scotland, the Society for Photographic Education, National Press Photographer's Association (NPPA), and the American Society for Media Photographers (ASMP). In 2006 he published The Photographer's Guide to the Digital Darkroom and has contributed to BK Magazine. With Scott King he is the co-owner of K2 Press Inc., a digital and fine art printing studio in Austin.

Scope and Contents

90 11x14" black-and-white and color photographs by six local photographers document various neighborhoods in Austin, Texas in 1985-1986. Imagery includes portraits of individuals and families in and in front of their homes, interior and exterior views of houses, children's sports and activities, street views, and construction. Social events depicted include events in private homes, at churches, a college graduation (possibly at Huston-Tillotson University), and a parade with Little Miss East Austin. Only photographs by Ave Bonar have identifications and dates.

Photographs by Michelle Campbell are not present. The written essays that were originally part of the project are not included with this collection.

The photographs are grouped alphabetically by photographer. Within each photographer's set, prints were numbered in the order they were received. Ave Bonar's photographs were titled, so her photos are listed individually in the container list. The collection is housed in two custom made, linen-covered boxes. Each photographer's set of prints is in an individual custom box set inside one of the two larger boxes.
