Biographical Note

José Flores was born on December 10, 1941 and lived in Sinton, Texas as a child. His father was a field foreman when he was young and the family traveled around Texas in the summer and fall for employment picking cotton. Flores was one of eight children and the first in his family to attend college. He graduated from Sinton High School in 1961 and was awarded a scholarship to Texas A&M in Kingville where he decided he wanted to help other Mexican Americans through education. After graduating in 1966 he worked as a visiting teacher in Victoria, Texas for six and half years. While in Victoria Flores completed his Masters in Guidance and Counseling at Texas A&M in Kingville. In 1972 he became interested in the Pan American University of Texas at Austin (PAUTA) , a one year program for a Mid Management Certification, which qualified him to be a principal. After completing this program he was hired as the principal of Metz Elementary School for the 1973-74 school year. In 1984 Flores was assigned to post of principle at Allan Elementary School for one year, became a supervising principal in 1985 and then served as the Barrington Elementary School principal starting in the 1989-1990 school year. He returned to Metz (temporarily relocated to the Webb Building while the new school was being built) as principal for the 1991-1992 school year and then became an Austin Independent School District Area Director. While at Metz Flores instituted the Neighborhood Parent Program (block meetings) to involve parents in their children's education; the Metz Publishing Company where kids wrote books in Spanish and English; and promoted and implemented bilingual education throughout the school.
