Creator Note

The name of the photographer or studio that created these portraits is unknown. The glass plates were found in an abandoned house (probably a photographer's studio) on or near East 15th Street in Austin and given to Bonnie Jewel Froman of the Museum of the Big Bend at Sul Ross State University.

Scope and Contents

86 glass plate negatives contain portraits of Austin citizens from the early twentieth century. The majority of the portraits (59) are of men. 21 of those are men in World War I-era military or naval uniform. 17 portraits are of women. There is one family group portrait and one portrait of a young boy. There are five wedding portraits and three portraits of couples. 24 of the plates were divided into halves and contain two portraits of the same individual. None of the individuals is identified. Repeated use of chairs, benches and painted backdrops affirms that these portraits were all taken in the same photographic studio.

Arrangement

The negatives were kept in the order they were received and numbered 001-086. Nitrate negatives are items 067, 074, and 086; all other items are glass plates.
