Grand United Order of Odd Fellows in America. Prince Hill Lodge No. 9556 Ledger
An Inventory of the Collection
The Grand United Order of Odd Fellows, a mutual aid, fraternal organization, was established in America in 1843. Free African American men in New York wanted to establish a lodge but the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (the English Odd Fellows underwent several splits and nearly all white American Odd Fellows identified themselves with the Independent Order) refused to grant them a charter. With the assistance of Peter Ogden, a black man who traveled between New York and Liverpool as a ship steward, England, a charter was obtained from an English lodge and the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows Philomathean Lodge, No. 645 was established in New York City. The emphasis of the organization was charity, benevolence, morality, and temperance. The practical benefits of membership included defraying expenses of burial, sickness, disability and widowhood. The number of lodges in the United States increased rapidly and it is estimated that 300,000 to 400,000 members were actively participating in the organization by the end of the nineteenth century.
