Biographical Note

Philip Louis Meyer (1842-1917) arrived in Austin in 1870. While working at the P. Pressler Brewery near Austin, he served as a representative for the San Antonio Brewing Association. He had one son, Theo P. Meyer, who was born in 1878.

Theo P. Meyer (1878-1966) attended Austin public schools and Texas A&M University. He was the owner of the Meyer Creamery and director of the Austin First Federal Savings and Loan Association. He was a volunteer of Austin's Volunteer Protection Hose Company, a director of the Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Ben Hur Temple. In 1899, he married Antonie Von Boeckmann (died 1961), daughter of Austin pioneer publisher Eugene Von Boeckmann. They had two sons, Eugene L. (1901-1987) and Theo P., Jr. (1910-1990). The Meyers attended St. Martin's Lutheran Church.

Eugene L. Meyer, who was also a member of the Ben Hur Temple, worked in the creamery business for over twenty years. He started the Comal Creamery in New Braunfels. In 1939, he married Vivian Penny.

For four years during World War II, Theo P. Meyer, Jr., served as a captain in the Air Force. He was a University of Texas graduate and a member of the Texas Rifle Team, which competed at Camp Perry, Ohio. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association, the Austin Club, the Headliners Club, the Masonic Lodge #12, the Ben Hur Temple, the York Rite, and the Royal Order of Jesters. He served as president of both the Austin Rifle Club and the Exchange Club.

Scope and Contents

Business ledgers, real-estate contracts, correspondence, certificates, programs, brochures, dance cards, scrapbooks, autograph books, broadsides, hand-colored portraits, photographs, and artifacts represent the Meyer family's activities. Some documents relate to the family-owned-and-operated Meyer Creamery. Of special interest is the business ledger labeled "Record of Fermented Liquors Made and Sold or Removed for Consumption or Sale at the Brewery Carried on by P. Pressler Near the city of Austin..."

Scrapbooks contain clippings, printed items, correspondence, scorecards, invitations, calling cards, postcards, and photographs. Scrapbooks are compiled around topics such as bowling and marksmanship, the Texas Rifle Team, ceremonies (weddings and anniversaries), autographs, and the Air Force.

A large portion of this collection documents the life of Theo P. Meyer, Jr., and his activities in World War II.
