Biographical Note

Theresa Matocha Rugeley was born on February 19, 1921 in Cameron, Texas to Albert J. Matocha and Tressie Louise Mondrick. After graduating from Yoe High School in 1938 Matocha entered the Seton Hospital School of Nursing in Austin, Texas. She graduated in 1941 passing her State Boards for Nursing in November of that same year. Although it appears that Matocha has some interest in military nursing she went to work as a nurse in the Rugeley and Blasingame Clinic, and in 1949 married Dr. Frank Robert Rugeley.

The Seton Hospital School of Nursing was established in Austin, Texas in 1902, the same year the Seton Hospital (known then as the Seton Infirmary) was opened by the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul. The nursing school was on the 4th floor of the hospital building which was located 600 26th Street (between Nueces and Rio Grande). The first class had four students enrolled. The school continued to expand and graduated more than 730 nurses before closing because of lack of enrollment in 1963.

Scope and Contents

The scrapbook assembled by Theresa Matocha Rugeley spans the years 1938 through 1948 with the bulk of the materials dating from 1938 through 1941. The scrapbook begins with her letters of acceptance from the Seton Hospital School of Nursing and ends with cards and letters of congratulations on her graduation. Also included are examples of her school work; photographs of the Seton buildings, classmates, Daughters of Charity, family and friends; newspaper clippings about Seton happenings and events; correspondence from the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas; and ephemera such as her nurses cap and a patch from her uniform sleeve. Given the delicate nature of the scrapbook materials that were loose in the pages are boxed separately.
