Arthur and Lilian Von Boeckmann Papers
An Inventory of the Collection
Reinhardt Von Boeckmann was born in Germany in 1855. He came to the United States in 1867, living in New Braunfels, Texas for five years before moving to Austin, Texas in 1872. He married Laura Bastian, also from Germany, in 1876. The couple had six children: Felix, Franz, Arthur, Walter, Carl and Hertha. Reinhardt was a printer by trade and started the Von Boeckmann-Jones Company in Austin, Texas in 1902. He died in 1909 and Laura passed away in 1938.
Arthur von Boeckmann, born October 23, 1889, married Lillian Husson in 1914. Lilian was the daughter of Maria Barkinger and Francis Husson of New Orleans, Louisiana. Lilian had five siblings: Harold, Ernest, John, Catherine, Elizabeth. Little is known about the couple but it appears that Arthur worked at his father's printing company and was a purchasing agent for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. At some point the couple moved to Chicago, and then on to New Orleans in the late 1950s. Arthur died in 1963 and Lilian passed away a year later, both in New Orleans.
The collection is composed principally of family photographs, along with a limited amount of biographical information and legal documents, dating from the late 1800s to 1974. A small portion of the photographs are labeled and consist of an assortment of photographs from Arthur's childhood of he and his siblings, as well as photographs of Arthur, Lilian and family as adults. The majority of the photographs are unidentified and span from the late 1800s to the 1960s. Many of the unidentified photographs are stamped with the name of the photographer's studio with New Orleans's addresses so it can be surmised that these are photographs of Lilian's family.
The biographical information consists of obituaries of various Von Boeckmann and Husson family members, news clippings, postcards, a diary and a funeral program. The legal documents concern the estate's of Arthur Von Boeckmann and his sister Hertha Elsie Von Boeckmann.
