Biographical Note

Pat Toth is an Austin, Texas resident with an avid interest in Austin public schools and the Austin Independent School District (AISD). The City of Austin has named many of its schools to commemorate the lives and deeds of Austin citizens that have made an impact on their community. Schools have been named after Texas war heroes and statesman, authors and educators and friends of the Austin education system.

Scope and Contents

The materials in the collection document the history of Austin schools and the people the schools were named to commemorate. Schools represented are: Akins High, Allan Jr. High, Allison Elementary, Anderson High (original and new), Austin High, Andrews Elementary, Bailey Middle School, Baldwin Elementary, Baranoff Elementary, Barrington Elementary, Barton Hills Elementary, Bedichek Middle School, Blackshear Elementary, Blanton Elementary, Blazier Elementary, Boone Elementary, Brooke Elementary, Brown Elementary, Campbell Elementary, Casey Elementary, Casis Elementary, Clayton Elementary, Cook Elementary, Covington Middle School, Cowan Elementary, Cummingham Elementary, Dawson Elementary, Dobie Middle School, Doss Elementary, Fulmore Middle School, Galindo Elementary, Gorzycki Middle School, Graham Elementary, Gullett Elementary, Harris Elementary, Hill Elementary, Houston Elementary, Jordan Elementary, Joslin Elementary, Kealing Middle School, Kiker Elementary, Kocurek Elementary, Langford Elementary, Lanier High, Linder Elementary, Martin Middle School, Mathews Elementary, McBee Elementary, McCallum High, Mendez Middle School, Metz Elementary, Mills Elementary, Murchison Middle School, Norman Elementary, Odam Elementary, Overton Elementary, Palm Elementary, Patton Elementary, Pearce Middle School, Pecan Springs Elementary, Pillow Elementary, Pleasant Hill Elementary, Read Elementary, Reilly Elementary, Sanchez Elementary, Sims Elementary, Small Middle School, Summit Elementary, Webb Middle School, Widen Elementary, Winn Elementary, Wooldridge Elementary, Wooten Elementary, Zavala Elementary. Materials about the aforementioned schools date from the late 1800s to present day and include newspaper articles about alumni reunions; school openings and dedications; sports teams and facilities; and obituaries of the school namesakes. In addition to the news clippings there are dedication ceremony programs and a few photographs of Austin High School and the original Anderson High School.

Toth also retained Austin American-Statesman articles about school names that ran about once a decade. Lastly there are several articles dating from 1892 to 1912 about African American teachers and schools.

Series I is organized alphabetically by school name. Schools with a significant amount of materials have individual folders, otherwise materials are filed together under the corresponding letter of the alphabet.
