International Women's Day Community Media Festival Records
An Inventory of the Collection
The International Women's Day Community Media Festival was started by Austin women committed to amplifying women's voices in the media. The first Festival was held in 1996 when members of the Women's Collective of KO.OP Radio and Women's Access to Electronic Resources (WATER) founder, Deborah Hill came up with the idea of collaboration to present women's media programming. The aim was to increase the number of progressive media representations of women, as well as to bring more women into the production process. The Festival was held in conjunction with International Women's Day on March 8th and featured 24 hours of radio, television, and internet programming by women, about issues of interest to women. Each Festival also provided training workshops in media arts for women in the months preceding the festival. In 2001 the organization was renamed the Austin Women's International Media (WIM) Network to reflect their commitment to providing ongoing year-round programs and resources to promote women's participation in independent media.
This small collection contains both textual materials related to the International Women's Day Community Media Festival as well as audio cassettes of programming created during the Festival dating from 1995 to 2002. Included are press releases, event flyers and programs, Festival forms, logistical information and an organizational history. Also included is a limited amount of information about organizations affiliated with the Festival such as The Foundation for a Compassionate Society, Women's Collective of KO.OP Radio, Women's Access to Electronic Resources (WATER) and Women's Word. The audio recordings (compact discs and audio cassettes) document the types of programming produced by the Festival in 1998 and 2002.
