Abstract: Erna Rockwood, a lifelong Austin, Texas resident, was born in 1911 to Kathe and Sigmund Guttman. The collection consists of three scrapbooks spanning the years 1923 to 1993 composed principally of photographs, correspondence and other memorabilia highlighting her thirty-six year career with Sears, Roebuck and Company.

Biographical Note

A native of Austin, Erna Guttman Rockwood was born April 2, 1911, to Kathe and Sigmund Guttman. She attended Palm Elementary School, John T. Allan High School and Austin High School. She married Robert F. Rockwood.

Rockwood started working at the Sears, Roebuck and Company Congress Avenue store in 1936 in the Cashiering Department. In her thirty-six year career she worked in all operating offices before retiring from the Audit Department in 1973. In addition to her career at Sears, Rockwood was a member of the Zonta Club of Austin, the Credit Women's Breakfast Club of Austin, the Grand Chapter of Texas Order of the Eastern Star and the Sears-Austin Retiree Club.

Rockwood died July 29, 1997.

Scope and Contents

Three scrapbooks composed principally of materials concerning Erna Rockwood's thirty-six year career with Sears make up the Erna Rockwood Scrapbook collection. The first volume spans the years 1923 through 1968 and includes letters, cards, newspaper clippings, employee photographs and memorabilia in recognition of her 25th and 30th years of service; clippings, photographs and memorabilia of the celebration of the Sears 75th Anniversary Year in 1961; correspondence concerning Rockwood's idea to increase efficiency with new appliance tags; and newspaper clippings about the profit sharing fund of Sears. This scrapbook also includes a limited amount of personal items including correspondence, programs and certificates highlighting her membership in civic organizations; certificates from the Austin Public School (AISD) system; and newspaper clippings about her nephew Walter Guttman Jr.'s marriage to Nancy Grimm. The second scrapbook contains photographs and letters celebrating Rockwood's thirty-fifth anniversary at Sears in 1971. The final scrapbook consists mainly of correspondence, cards and photographs congratulating Rockwood on her retirement from Sears in 1973. In addition there are two 1993 newspaper articles about the financial challenges facing Sears, Roebuck and Co.
