Administrative History

The Auxiliary of the Travis Chapter of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers (TSPE) was formed on February 1, 1950 to support the activities of the Travis chapter of the TSPE. Its membership was composed largely of the wives and daughters of TSPE members. As stated in an early version of the constitution and bylaws, the goals of the Auxiliary were to "promote interest in the professional engineer and his place in society" and "to promote the best interest of the professional engineer, his family and the Travis Chapter". The organization continues to promote the engineering profession by holding social functions such as banquets and by sponsoring educational programs such as MATHCOUNTS, a nationwide program that promotes math excellence for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. It also holds various fundraising events including fashion shows in support of the Leah Moncure Memorial Scholarship, an award established by the Auxiliary in 1965 for female engineering students at the University of Texas at Austin Cockrell School of Engineering. Miss Moncure was the first woman to be registered as an engineer in the state of Texas and the first female member of the TSPE. She was also an early Auxiliary member.

Scope and Contents

The Texas Society of Professional Engineers Auxiliary Records (1950-2005, undated) are comprised of administrative records, material pertaining to the Leah Moncure Scholarship, various printed items, scrapbooks, photographs and negatives. The administrative series comprises a large volume of material and includes an early constitution and bylaws, guidelines from the national organization, and a variety of material from administrative officers. The President's Book and President's Record encompass more recent activities (1996-1997 and 2001-2003) and includes notes, minutes, correspondence, material concerning MATHCOUNTS and Adopt-A-School as well as correspondence and treasurer's reports. The Recording and Corresponding Secretaries' records (1953 to 1987) are arranged in original order at the folder level by date. They encompass material similar to that contained in the President's Book such as notes, minutes, correspondence, financial statements and information related to the Leah Moncure Scholarship award. Other material includes correspondence with the organization's first president, H. K. Rigsbee (1951) and general Auxiliary correspondence (1958-1964, 1975, 1981, 1993-1995). Financial records (1969-1980, 1997-1999) round out the series and include budgets, treasurer's reports and financial statements. The Leah Moncure Scholarship series (1974, 1976-2003)includes biographical information on Leah Moncure as well as a sizable number of applications and supporting applicant documentation. There is also information pertaining to scholarship winners and various banquets held in their honor. Financial statements and treasurers reports (1974, 1977-1978, 1980-1981) related to the scholarship fund are included in this series. Printed material (1958-2002) includes certificate received by and publications of the Auxiliary such as membership directories, newsletters, yearbooks, a handbook, and a book of recipes. Scrapbooks (1950-2005) make up the bulk of the collection and include photographs of various social and fund raising activities, banquet invitations, correspondence, newsletters and clippings. The years 1952, 1976-77, and 1987-1992 are missing in this series. The final series, Photographs, (1995, 2001, undated) document various functions and fundraising activities sponsored by the Auxiliary. This series also contains a very small number of negatives.

The collection is arranged into 5 series:
I: Administrative
II: Leah Moncure Scholarship
III: Printed Material
IV: Scrapbooks
V: Photographs
