Biographical Note

Lemuel Stubbs was born in Randolph County, Georgia on September 14, 1826. The 1860 census lists his residence as Texas. His wife, Temperance Stubbs (she was Lemuel's third wife) was born in Georgia on May 15, 1846 and moved to Texas with her family in 1849. Lemuel and Temperance moved to Austin, Texas in 1910. The Stubbs had 2 daughters Alma, Clara and 5 sons, B. J., N. T., A. L., O. A. and J. B. Stubbs. Lemuel died on August 30, 1914. Temperance died in Austin in 1941. While living in Austin she was very active in the Northside Church of Christ.

O. A. Stubbs was born in 1878. He was married to Sue Stubbs and they had three children, Wright (born 1905), O. Aubrey (born 1910) and Barbara (born 1913). Aubrey (also known as O. A.) married Thelma (Pam) Hamilton of Austin. Thelma was born in 1914 to Houston and Annie Hamilton and had three siblings Athel, Allen Ray and Altha Lavone. O. Aubrey Stubbs died on September 9, 2002 and Thelma followed in 2003.

Scope and Contents

The Stubbs Family Papers are a combination of materials from two separate donors. The first donation mainly consists of one linear foot of photographs, the majority of which are not identified. The few photographs that do include identifying information span from 1916-1964 and include yearly Christmas cards, student photographs from Baker Jr. High, 50th anniversary photograph of Blanco High School teachers (1934), and photographs from Sabinal High School where Barbara Stubbs was employed as a teacher. Along with the photographs there are few letters, newspaper clippings, religious writings with Mrs. O. A. Stubbs' name on them and assorted printed materials that highlight the relationship between some of the family members.

The second part of the collection came from the estate of Allen Hamilton (brother of Thelma Hamilton Stubbs). The majority of this donation consists of letters written by O. Aubrey Stubbs to Thelma Hamilton Stubbs during World War II while he was stationed at various military bases both in the United States and overseas. The letters are dated from 1937 to 1945, during which time the couple was married. Additional correspondence includes letters to Thelma from various family members. Also present are several items of ephemera including a pass issued to Thelma by the military in 1945 to visit her husband at Camp Crowder, Missouri, a Certificate of Title to a motor vehicle purchased by Thelma in 1940 and a note from Dr. F. C. Gregg dated 10/23/1930 certifying that he vaccinated Thelma against small pox. There is also a will written by Otis Aubrey Stubbs on August 24, 1959 leaving "all I possess" to his wife, Thelma.
