Administrative History

Formerly the Entrepreneurs' Association (EA) founded in 1989, the Business Success Center (BSC) was renamed and restructured in 2000 by Daniel Diener, CFO, and Jan Triplett, COO. Having purchased the EA from Martin Palmer in 1992, Diener and Triplett, a husband-wife business team, used the for-profit organization to help small businesses succeed in Austin, Texas. Their collective experience owning and operating Diener, Triplett & Associates, Inc. (1982-1992), an advertising and marketing venture for private businesses, coupled with Jan Triplett's work as the Chief Editor for The Networker magazine (1980-1997), a business publication designed to support and facilitate networking for Texas women, provided the background needed to teach both new and old businesses to survive and thrive in competitive local and international markets. The BSC sponsored educational workshops and events to teach new business owners the networking and marketing strategies needed to grow while simultaneously sponsoring awards ceremonies, like The Heavy Hitters Dinner (1992-2005), to honor the achievements of established Austin businesses. In addition, Jan Triplett worked with a small team to conduct a four-year research study for the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) in 1999 regarding the importance of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in public relations decisions for small businesses. Dan Diener and Jan Triplett continue to own and operate the BSC in Austin.

Scope and Contents

Financial documents, correspondence, letters, printed material, legal documents, surveys, and photographs, 1980-2007 (5.5 linear feet), created and maintained by Jan Triplett and Daniel Diener in the conduct of affairs for the Business Success Center (formerly Entrepreneurs' Association), The Networker magazine, and Diener, Triplett & Associates, Inc., document their efforts to improve and educate small businesses throughout Austin. Grouped into three subgroups reflective of the distinct functions of each entity, the bulk of the records (1989-2005; 4.75 linear feet) pertain to the activities of the BSC/EA. A substantial portion of the records documents awards and events, specifically the Austin-based small business participants of the annual Heavy Hitters Dinner (1992-2005; 1.25 linear feet). Other records series deal with the IABC research study, illuminating the iterative research process (1999-2004; 0.4 linear feet), and the EA's outreach to international markets (1993-2001; 0.4 linear feet). Especially well documented are trade missions to Ecuador (1993-1995). A small body of material, primarily financial documents and a single issue of the publication, record the early activities of The Networker magazine (1984-1987). Though brief, records related to Diener, Triplett & Associates, Inc. (1983-1994; 0.25 linear feet) illustrate the creators' early successful efforts to assist small businesses in Austin, Texas, as revealed through letters of support and recommendation.
