Biographical Sketch

The Ulit family emigrated from Germany in 1855 and settled in New Braunfels, Texas, where William Ulit, Jr. was born in 1865. William Ulit, Jr. married Selma Hofmann in 1888 and a few years later in 1891, they relocated to Austin, Texas. Together they had four children: Antonio Bertha (1889-1969), Otillie Marie (1891-?), Harry Henry (1894-1969), and Oscar Alfred (1896-1969).

Antonio Ulit married Reinhold Pfeifer in 1909 and their marriage lasted 42 years until his death in 1951. They did not have any children. Antonio Ulit Pfeifer did the accounting for Ed Pfeifer and Son (later named Pfeifer Music Company), a local Austin business that made and sold pianos and organs from 1919 to 1956.

Oscar Ulit married Idalee LeMaster in 1919 and they had two children together: Josephine “Jo” Ulit (1920- ) and Dorothy Leigh (1923-1971).

Jo Ulit was active in social and cultural events in high school and college, was a volunteer at Bergstrom Air Force Base (originally called Del Valle Air Force Base, Bergstrom Field) during World War II, and went to American Airlines stewardess training school in New York.

Alfred Hofmann was not a Ulit, but the brother of Selma Hofmann and maternal uncle to the children of William and Selma Ulit.

Scope and Contents

1 linear foot of records document the lives and activities of the various Ulit family members and relatives. The collection is arranged into the records of Antonio Ulit Pfeifer, Oscar Ulit and Harry Ulit, Josephine “Jo” Ulit, and general materials collected by the entire Ulit family (including Selma Hofmann Ulit’s brother, Alfred Hofmann).

Antonio Ulit Pfeifer’s materials consist of certificates dating from 1889 to 1909, books dating from 1904 and 1949, and financial material dating from 1919 to 1956 of the Pfeifer Music Company, for which Antonio was the accountant. The accounting ledgers make up the majority of her records.

Two items document the lives of Oscar Ulit and Harry Ulit: Oscar’s baptism certificate from 1896, and a pastel drawing of the two boys from around the same time.

Josephine “Jo” Ulit’s materials make up the majority of the Ulit Family Papers, consisting primarily of three scrapbooks from her time at school, Bergstrom Air Force Base, and at American Airlines. Loose materials from her scrapbook were organized into corresponding folders. Of note are 28 photographs documenting her time as a volunteer at Bergstrom Air Field Base during World War II (#1-28).

The general materials of the Ulit family consist of printed materials dating from 1932 to 1966. Of note is an invitation to Governor W. Lee O’Daniel’s inaugural parade in 1939. There are also nuclear attack safety pamphlets that were prepared by residents of Austin and Travis County in 1966. A small amount of black-and-white photographs dating from the 1920s to the 1940s document Governor O’Daniel’s inaugural parade down Congress Avenue (#29-39); various outdoor portraits taken at local parks, including Zilker, Bull Creek, Pease, and East Avenue Park (#40-93, 95-99); and studio portraits and group photos (#94, 100-112). There is documentation of persons and locations pictured written on the backs of many of the photographs. An autograph book of Alfred Hofmann, Selma Hofmann Ulit’s brother, is also part of the general materials, and dates from 1892 to 1936.
