Historical Background

John Julian Greer was born August 24, 1920, to John and Rhea Greer of Sioux City, Iowa. Greer received a law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1943. He subsequently served in World War II as captain in the U.S. Army, 343rd Infantry, 86th Division, and as Judge Advocate General (J.A.G.) counsel for the Japanese war crimes trials. Greer lived in Spencer, Iowa, where he was a partner at the James and Greer Law Firm (later Greer, Nelson, Bertell, Montgomery, Barry & Bovee), and served as a founder of the Iowa Academy of Trial Lawyers.
