Biographical Note

Awarding winning Texas Tejano musician and visual artist Oscar Martinez was born on January 3, 1934 and raised in Corpus Christi, Texas. He first established himself as a songwriter, trumpet player, and performer in the 1950s and went on record well known tunes such as "La Mala Cara," "El Gallo Copetón," and "El Tejano Enamorado." Martinez colaborated with other Tejano musicians such as Isidro Lopez, Freddie Martinez, and Leo Saenz, and spent much of his career touring to perform all over Texas. He also hosted a radio program on KCCT in Corpus. In 1999 Martinez was inducted into the Tejano Music Awards Hall of Fame.

Scope and Contents Note

The collection is divided into six series; Paper Material, Clippings, Artifacts, Audio Visual Material, Artwork and Posters.

The Paper Material series includes flyers, printed material such as business cards, sheet music, a copy of Oscar Martinez's birth certifcate and an interview that he gave for his 75th birthday.

The Artifacts in this collection include a Oscar Martinez's calendar, his diary, and promotional pins.

The Audiovisual series includes photographs of Oscar Martinez dating back to 1936, LPs, an 8 track, a tape recording, and CDs.

The Artwork series includes art by Oscar Martinez. His artworks are broken up into different subseries which include portraits of musicians, skeletons, parrots, and other miscellaneous subjects.

The Oversize Material series contains clippings, homemade posters and concert posters. It also contains oversize artwork by Oscar Martinez.
