E. W. Burke Letter, May 23, 1900
E. W. Burke was the son of John W. Burke (1830-1871) and Jennie Taylor. Burke's siblings included one brother and sister. His father, J. W. (John W.) Burke was a scout and spy for the Confederate Army and was Robert E. Lee's "favorite spy." He was also a cobbler while studying law, a prominent criminal defense attorney, and Texas adjutant general.
