Biographical Note

Frederick Albert Schlick was born to August Eduard and Auguste Elwine (Giesecke) Schlick in 1840. He moved with his family from Andreasberg, Germany, to Galveston, Texas in 1846. Albert Schlick served in the Confederate army during the Civil War in Company G., Fourth Texas Cavalry, as First Junior Lieu-tenant and afterwards as Lieutenant, and participated in all the battles in which his command was engaged, except during a short time, when he was a prisoner of war. His brother, Richard Schlick, also fought in the Confederate Army. Albert married Helen Witte in 1868 and settled first in Fayette County, then Gonzales County. Schlick served in the Texas House of Representatives from 1897 to 1913. F. Albert Schlick died on September 11, 1923, in Gonzales, Texas.

F. Albert Schlick diary, 1862-1863, is comprised of a typescript of a translation of a diary kept by F. Albert Schlick during the spring and summer of 1862, while Schlick was a member of Company G, 4th Regiment, Texas Calvary, during the Civil War. The diary relates to his experiences in battle, as a prisoner of war, and as an escaped prisoner returning to his company. The diary also includes the experience of Albert's brother, Richard Schlick, during the same time.
