Biographical Note

Daughter of Judge David Pickle and Birdie Givens Pickle, Mildred Pickle Mayhall was a teacher, writer, wife of Temple Bland Mayhall, and mother. She taught anthropology at the University of Texas at Austin and history at Austin High School. Mayhall wrote her dissertation and two books on the American Indians of Texas, collaborated on a seventh grade Texas history textbook, and contributed several articles to various publications.

Scope and Contents

These papers consist of literary productions, correspondence, printed, and visual materials that document the life and career of Mildred Pickle Mayhall. The bulk of the papers are literary drafts and notes for Mayhall's doctoral dissertation and books and articles pertaining to the American Indians of the Southwest and to Texas history.

Material related to Texas Governor Joseph D. Sayers includes a ledger of the Jones and Sayers law firm, 1869-1879.

Records of an Austin textbook publishing firm, Graphic Ideas, Inc., for whose board of directors Mayhall served as secretary, are among her papers.
