Biographical Note

Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1921, Chester Burger began his career with CBS radio in 1941 and became the first television reporter, with CBS television news (1946-1948), advancing to news editor (1950-1952), and national manager (1953). From 1955 to 1988 he worked in the public relations field and as a consultant for various corporations such as American Telephone and Telegraph Company where he played a part in establishing policy toward corporate divestiture.

He has been a consultant for many professional and non-profit organizations and federal agencies, including the United States Information Agency. He has authored several books and lectured extensively on the role of public relations in management.

Scope and Contents

The Chester Burger Papers, 1921-2010, are comprised of scrapbooks, day timers, calendars, printed material, notes, videotapes, audiocassettes, and CD and DVD recordings, which document the life and career of Chester Burger.

Scrapbooks contain correspondence, clippings, employment records, speeches, memoranda, photographs, promotional material, and ephemera relating to Burger's involvement in the early development of CBS television news, CIO labor union activities before and after World War II, American Telephone and Telegraph Company prior to divestiture, and the civil rights movement as an officer of the National Urban League during the early 1960s.

Records produced during Burger's tenure as president of Echelons Office Temporaries document the New York World's Fair, in particular its personnel. Personal correspondence and memorabilia reflect Burger's private life, family, friends, activities, and interests.
