Biographical Note

Austin native Janette Powell Patterson graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1969 and earned her law degree from the University of Texas School of Law in 1973. From September 1973 to October 1974, she served as a law clerk to the Honorable Harold R. Tyler, Jr., then United States District Judge for the Southern District of New York. She was then associated with the New York law firm of Sullivan & Cromwell before being assigned to the Criminal Division of the United States District Court - Southern District of New York. She served as a member of the Organized Crime Task Force and received an award for her narcotics and fraud prosecutions. During her time in New York she also served on the Board of Directors of The Dakota, the famed New York apartment building, and as Officer and Organizer of Events on the Board of Directors for the New York Federal Bar Council.

Justice Patterson returned to Austin in 1988. She served as a federal prosecutor, as an adjunct and assistant professor at the University of Texas Law School, and worked for the law firm of Johnson & Swanson before returning to private practice. She successfully campaigned for a seat on the Texas Third Court of Appeals in 1998 and 2004. She joined the faculty of Baylor Law School in 2012 as a Justice in Residence. Justice Patterson has served as Chair of the Litigation Section of the State Bar of Texas; as Chair of the appellate judges of the State Bar judiciary section; and as Trustee of the Texas Center for Legal Ethics and Professionalism. She is a frequent speaker and lecturer and has been awarded multiple honors, including the Travis County Women Lawyers' Association Outstanding Achievement Award in 2003 and the University of Texas Friar Outstanding Alumna in 2004. She lives in Austin, Texas.

Content Description

The Jan P. Patterson papers, 1933-2019, document the life and career of Patterson, a UT graduate who served as a Texas District Court judge and as a member of the Texas Commission on Judicial Conduct. The papers relate to her time as a lawyer in New York City, as a district judge, and to her work prosecuting organized crime as a federal prosecutor.

Correspondence, newspapers and newspaper clippings, court files, meeting minutes, printed material, calendars, and books document Patterson's various professional activities including her clerkships and law firm practices; her tenure as a board member for organizations such as Planned Parenthood, the Dakota apartment building in New York City, and the New York Federal Bar Council; and her career as a judge. Campaign materials related to Patterson's successful 1998 and 2004 run for a seat on the Texas Third Court of Appeals can be found, as can a multitude of materials documenting Justice Patterson's professional, personal, and family life and history.
