Biographical / Historical

Frank Brown (1833-1913), born in Tennessee, grew up in Texas, where he remained for the rest of his life. He was intermittently elected county clerk of Travis County between 1856 and 1876, and he served as county clerk for successive terms from 1876 to 1892. Following his retirement, Brown wrote and assembled the Annals of Travis County and of the City of Austin, also known as Brown's Annals, which were published around 1900. He married Georgiana McLemore in 1856; they had 12 children together. Brown died in Austin in 1913.

Scope and Contents

The Frank Brown papers contain typed and handwritten manuscripts, as well as critical reviews, of the Annals of Travis County and of the City of Austin. Also included are Brown's appointment as a trustee to the Blind Institute of Texas and a photograph of Brown and his wife, Georgiana McLemore Brown. The Annals of Travis County and of the City of Austin relate the history of Austin and Travis County to 1900 and were written by Brown between 1892 and 1899.
