![]() Helen Garvy and Robert Pardun Papers, 1960-2007Biographical NoteHelen Garvy became active in civil rights movements while at Harvard University in the 1960s. In 1963, she helped start the Harvard chapter of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and was elected assistant national secretary in 1964. In 1967, she moved to San Francisco to teach in an alternative school. Garvy is a filmmaker and author. Her works include the documentary Rebels With a Cause (2000), a history of SDS, and the book Before You Shoot: A Guide to Low-Budget Film and Video Production (1985). Robert Pardun, born in Kansas, was a founder of the SDS chapter at the University of Texas in 1964. A graduate student in mathematics, he dropped out of school and became an SDS national officer in 1967. After the SDS dissoved in 1969, he joined a commune in the Ozarks. He has been a math instructor and metal worker, and he served as associate producer of Garvy's documentary Rebels With a Cause. He is the author of Prairie Radical: A Journey Through the Sixties (2001). The Garvy and Pardun papers include photographs, news releases, and Federal Bureau of Investigation files on Robert Pardun and student protests at the University of Texas at Austin in the 1960s.
