Historical Note

The Texas Society for Mental Hygiene was organized in 1934 in the hall of the Texas House of Representatives. Mrs. Violet Greenwood, presiding officer and chief of the group's division of child welfare, observed the importance of such a group in a Texas, where "there are about 10,000 patients in our state hospitals for mental diseases and numerous malajustments through disorders less serious." The group was reorganized in 1950 as the Texas Society for Mental Health, and subsequently became a strong advocate for reform. In later reorganization, the group was renamed the Mental Health Association in Texas. Helen Farabee, a Texas mental health and human services advocate, was counted among the group's leadership. When it ceased operations in August 2017, the group was called Mental Health America of Texas, which promoted preventing mental disorders and substance abuse.
