Historical Note

Domingo "Sam" Samudio was born in Dallas, Texas, in 1937. He formed the Tex-Mex rock and roll band Sam the Sham and The Pharaohs in 1961. Samudio was the group's lead singer; other original group members included Carl Medke, Russell Fowler, Omar "Big Man" Lopez, and Vincent Lopez. The original lineup recorded one record, and the group disbanded in 1962.

In 1963, Samudio restarted Sam the Sham with a new lineup: Samudio (vocals/organ); Dave Martin (bass); Ray Stinnet (guitar); Jerry Patterson (drums); and Butch Gibson (saxophone). Their song "Wooly Bully" sold more than three million copies and was named Billboard magazine's Record of the Year for 1965. In 1967, the group disbanded.

In 2016, Samudio was inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame.
