Dale F. Garlock papers, 1941-1969Biographical NoteChief Yeoman Dale Foster Garlock enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1940 in Salt Lake City, Utah. On December 7, 1941, he was serving as File Yeoman, handling personnel records, at Naval Station Pearl Harbor. As the Japanese fleet attacked the U.S. Pacific fleet, Garlock received two teletypes. The first message from CINPAC (US Commander in Chief Pacific) to "ALL SHIPS AND STATIONS AT PEARL" read "AIRRAID ON PEARL X THIS IS NO DRILL." The following CINPAC message read "HOSTILITIES WITH JAPAN COMMENCED WITH AIRRAID ON PEARL." Garlock retired from the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant Commander in 1969. Garlock's records document his service, including his duties at Pearl Harbor in 1941, when he received teletypes announcing "AIRRAID ON PEARL X THIS IS NO DRILL" and "HOSTILITIES WITH JAPAN COMMENCED WITH AIRRAID OF PEARL." Service records include correspondence and forms from Garlock's induction into the Navy in 1941 to his retirement in 1969.
