Biographical Note

Stephen Shames was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1947, and began his photojournalistic work in 1967. He has attributed his photographic engagement with subjects related to family, neglect, and abuse, to his own childhood.

As a student at the University of California, Berkeley, Shames began photographing examples of student unrest, including protests and events. During the late 1960s and 1970s he documented demonstrations and protests along with behind the scenes moments of the Black Panther Party. He was a privy photographer to private meetings held in Party headquarters along with scenes from Panther schools and free meal programs, and was able to document leaders Bobby Seale and Huey Newton at home and at work.

In 1977 Shames embarked on one of his most famous projects, Bronx Boys, commissioned by Look magazine. He returned to photograph the young people in this stigmatized neighborhood for decades. He photographed child prostitutes in Times Square for the German magazine Stern in 1979 and went on to document children in jail and living in poverty by the mid 1980s. Though he worked as a freelance photographer for most of his career, he was employed as photo editor and photographer for Philadelphia Inquirer, 1986 to 1991.

Many of Shames' photographic projects have become a stimulus for social change or interaction, as is the case with his work on Outside the Dream: Child Poverty in America, which was a collaboration with the Children's Defense Fund in 1985. The organization Family Support America used his series Pursuing the Dream: What Helps Poor Children and Their Families Succeed as part of a campaign to improve services to poor families in the United States. His work has taken him outside the United States, documenting AIDS orphans in Uganda in 2000, along with street kids in Bangladesh, India, Brazil, Romania, and Honduras. He has also completed projects that were utilized by advocacy groups to bring attention to the importance of fathers in low-income communities.

Stephen Shames is the author of nine monographs, including Power to the People: The World of the Black Panthers by Stephen Shames and Bobby Seale (Abrams, 2016); Bronx Boys (University of Texas Press, 2014); Outside the Dream: Child Poverty in America (Aperture & Children's Defense Fund, 1991); Pursuing the Dream: What Helps Children and Their Families Succeed (Aperture & Family Support America, 1997); and Free to Grow (Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University, 2003. He also contributed to The Way Home (Harry Abrams, 1999) and Homeless in America (Acropolis, 1988). He has earned numerous national and international awards and fellowships and his work has been featured in Newsweek, People, Esquire, and US News, among other publications. His work has been exhibited at countless prestigious museums.
