Biographical Note

Lucy Hanes Steller, of Martin's Ferry, Ohio, created a scrapbook of pressed color die-cut cards and handwritten poetry, circa 1895.

Earl Carlyle Center (1905-1995), married Kathryn Lucille Steller, Lucy Steller's daughter. Center played as a professional tuba/sousaphone player in a dance band led by Jack Crawford, "The Clown Prince of Jazz." His 1926-1927 scrapbook documents members of the band and venues where they played while on tour. Center later lived in Baytown, Texas.

Content Description

The Earl C. Center family collection consists of two scrapbooks. The Lucy Hanes Steller scrapbook, circa 1895, contains pressed die-cut cards, interspersed with handwritten poetry. The Earl C. Center scrapbook contains mementoes collected by Center during his career as a tuba/sousaphone player with the Jack Crawford jazz band. Center's scrapbook contains photographs, union cards, programs, and clippings.
