Lloyd Birdwell Eeyore's Birthday Party collection, 1965-1973
Lloyd Birdwell (1944-2014) was the founder of Eeyore's Birthday Party, an iconic Austin event started in 1964.
Born in Comfort, Texas, Birdwell graduated from St. Mark's School of Texas in 1960. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Texas at Austin, where he was elected to the Friar Society, was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity, and was an editor for student humor magazine The Ranger.
As a graduate student in the UT English Department, Birdwell began a spring gathering at Austin's Eastwoods Park named for the donkey in A.A. Milne's Winnie the Pooh. The day-long gathering moved to Pease District Park, where it continues as a celebrated Austin tradition.
The Lloyd Birdwell Eeyore's Birthday Party collection consists of an oversized guest book dating from 1965. Signatures include Lady Bird Johnson, Lynda Johnson, and UT English Professor Jim Ayres.
Also included is an oversized certificate recognizing Birdwell on the 10th anniversary of Eeyore's Birthday Party, 1973.
