Biographical Note

Osborn "Oz" Elliott (1924-2008) transformed Newsweek magazine during his 16-year editorship, doubling its circulation and modernizing the publication.

Elliott, a descendant of the Dutch Vorhees family that were early New York settlers, was the son of stock broker John Elliott and Audrey Osborn Elliott, a real-estate broker. He attended Harvard University, earning an A.B. degree in 1946, and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II; he witnessed the nuclear bombing devastation at Hiroshima, Japan, and wrote a first-person account of his experience. In 1946, Elliott worked as a reporter at the New York Journal of Commerce before becoming an editor at Time Magazine.

In 1955, Elliot was hired as business editor of Newsweek magazine, where he presided over its revitalization, as he became managing editor in 1959 and editor in 1961. During his tenure, Newsweek's circulation rose from 1.5 million readers in 1961, to 2.7 million in 1976, the year he left.

In 1975, Elliott was a founding chairman of the civic organization Citizens Committee for New York City. From 1976-1977, Elliott headed New York City's Office of Economic Opportunity, taking a $1 annual salary for the position, to help the city develop jobs during a time of economic downturn. In 1977, he became Dean of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism; after 1986, he served as the university's George T. Delacourt Professor, teaching journalism until 1994.

Elliott's publications include Men at the Top (1959) and an autobiography, The World of Oz (1980). He was editor of The Negro Revolution (1964), a comprehensive study of American racial attitudes based on material first published in Newsweek under his direction.

Elliott's encounter with the swindler David Hampton inspired John Guare's award-winning play Six Degrees of Separation.

The Asia Society's annual award is named in Elliott's honor, the Osborn Elliott Prize for Excellence in Journalism on Asia. In addition, the Osborn Elliott Award for Community Service is awarded annually by the Citizens Committee for New York City.
