Historical Note

Although the practice of ice skating stretches back for millennia, the modern era of figure skating and ice shows got its start in the early twentieth century as modern technologies allowed for the creation of indoor ice rinks. In 1915 the Berlin Ice Ballet performed "Flirting at St. Moritz" at the New York Hippodrome. The show was wildly popular and ran for 300 days. In 1936, Shipstad and Johnson established "Ice Follies" the first ice show made up entirely of professional ice skaters. The same year, legendary 3-time Olympic Gold medal winner in figure skating Sonja Henie opened her own ice show in Madison Square Gardens. She also starred in several ice-skating themed Hollywood movies, which further increased interest in figure skating and ice shows. Interest in ice shows continued to grow in the post war years, and in 1944 "Holiday on Ice" was established, followed shortly by Ice Capades, Ice Vogues, and many other ice shows.

Carl Moseley worked for Holiday on Ice as a treasurer and assistant company manager and traveled with the show from 1965-1968. His father, Carl H. Moseley, had been a local promoter in Tampa in the 1940's and was involved in the first three Holiday on Ice shows in Florida.
