![]() A Guide to the Elfleda Littlejohn Papers, 1921-1924
Biographical NoteElfleda Littlejohn was born on June 19, 1888, in Galveston, Texas. She gradauted from the Southwest Texas State Normal School in 1906 and from the University of Texas in 1908. She worked as the Supervisor of Music for Galveston Public Schools and in the Division of Rural Schools within the Texas State Department of Education before becoming Instructor of Music and Head of the Public School Music Department at UT, 1921-1924. She spoke about the "present status of public school music in Texas" at the conference upon the teacher-problem in Texas at the University in 1922. Littlejohn went on to earn a master's degree from the teachers college at Columbia University in 1929, with a thesis entitled "The professional treatment of music in teachers colleges." She was one of the founders of Alpha Delta State chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, the international society for women educators, and additionally served as Associate Professor of Music at Kent State University, approximately 1939 to 1949. She died on January 22, 1964, and is buried in Galveston.
