Biographical Note

Oscar Decker is a photographer and musician from Austin, Texas. Decker’s lifelong involvement with photography began in 1964 when he had the opportunity to photograph World War II Warbird airplanes. A University of Texas graduate (Class of 1974), Decker worked as a photographer and technician for the UT School of Liberal Arts. One of Decker’s photographs of Chuch Magee, a backline tour manager for the Rolling Stones, is displayed at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. As a musician, Decker co-founded the musical group Daytripper and has played at the legendary Armadillo World Headquarters, Antone’s, and several other well-known Central Texas venues.

Scope and Contents

Ranging in date from 1964 to 2015, the Oscar Decker Photographs consist of 1.5 linear feet of 35mm film negatives, color and black and white photographic prints, and publications and printed materials featuring Decker’s commercial photography taken in and around Austin, Texas. The archive also includes Decker’s Backline! Stones in the Mirror, 1994-2005, a photo essay documenting the Rolling Stones backstage. The archive’s political coverage includes images of political icons such as Richard Nixon, Ron Paul, and anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan. Images of national and Austin-based musicians are featured in the archive, including music legends The Rolling Stones, Willie Nelson, George Jones, Billy Gibbons, Eric Johnson, Julian Lennon, and Rotel and The Hot Tomatoes.
