Dana Brackenridge Casteel was born on May 15, 1877 in Grafton, West Virginia. He attended Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and earned a B.A. degree in 1899. He earned the M.A. degree from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1900 and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1903, with a major in zoology and a minor in botany. He began his teaching career as acting professor of biology at Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Missouri, and served as instructor in zoology at the University of Michigan before coming to The University of Texas at Austin as instructor of zoology in 1909. He moved up to adjunct professor in 1911, to associate professor in 1914, and to professor in 1919. He became professor emeritus in 1952.
Dr. Casteel was the author of seven major zoological publications. He served as chairman of the UT Department of Zoology from 1913 to 1915 and again from 1925 to 1947, and on the University Building Committee which was responsible for the creation of the master plan for location of all structures erected on the UT campus. Around 1940 he became a member and chairman of the premedical and predental student advisory and recommending committee, and he served on this committee until just before his death. Additionally, Dr. Casteel was a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi, and other social, medical, and biological associations.
