Historical Note

An architecture student at the University of Texas at Austin, Ida Scott took part in a program of correspondence with young people in Holland during World War II. The program was initiated by C.P. DeRidder, a teacher in Amsterdam, who wrote to the University of Texas in a letter published by the Daily Texan in 1945:

"...in order to give expression to their gratitude for our liberation, a group of intellectual young ladies and gentlemen have joined the Pan American Club of Amsterdam, for the purpose of bringing about a better understanding between the people of Holland and America, to promote sincere and lasting friendship...."

The Texas students exchanged letters, photos, books, pamphlets, etc. with their counterparts in Holland. At the end of the war, Ida Scott's mother visited many of the correspondents in Holland, and also sent them clothes, food, sewing supplies, and other sundries that were in short supply in Europe during the war and immediately after.
