![]() A Guide to the Scott Carpenter Rescue at Sea Film, 1962
Biographical/Historical NoteScott Carpenter, born May 1, 1925, was one of the original seven astronauts selected by NASA in 1959 to be a part of Project Mercury, the first human spaceflight program of the United States. During the five-hour Mercury-Atlas 7 mission, Carpenter became the second American to orbit the Earth and the fourth American in space while piloting the Aurora 7 spacecraft on May 24, 1962. Though equipment malfunction caused Carpenter to overshoot his planned splashdown point in the Atlantic Ocean by 250 miles, he was safely recovered a few hours later by the USS Intrepid.
