![]() A Guide to the University of Texas and Civil Aeronautics Administration War Training Service Records, 1940-1944
Historical NoteIn 1940, in preparation for American entry into World War II, the U.S. military expanded the Civilian Pilot Training Program to hundreds of U.S. colleges and universities in order to train military personnel. With federal funds from the Civilian Aeronautical Administration, the University of Texas at Austin was one of many Texas colleges that prepared students for entry into both the Army and Navy Air Corps with the completion of ground school and flight training. Mechanical engineering Professor Venton L. Doughtie served as the coordinator of the specialized training program at UT. The program was taken over by the Army and Navy in December 1942. The program ended in March 1944. Sources: Fowler, Wallace T. "Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics: University of Texas at Austin – A Brief History."
