Biographical NoteBorn to Sidney Maury Orton and Louisa M. Timberlake in Nacogdoches County, Texas, Richard David Orton (1841-1885) enlisted in the 4th Brigade of the Texas Militia of the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Following the war, he was appointed sheriff of Nacogdoches County, where he quelled the Linn Flat Raid in 1871. Orton also founded the Nacogdoches newspaper the Chronicle.
