A Guide to the Richard David Orton Papers, 1872-1924
Born to Sidney Maury Orton and Louisa M. Timberlake in Nacogdoches County, Texas, Richard David Orton (1841-1885) enlisted in the 4th Brigade of the Texas Militia of the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Following the war, he was appointed sheriff of Nacogdoches County, where he quelled the Linn Flat Raid in 1871. Orton also founded the Nacogdoches newspaper the Chronicle.

Comprising correspondence and financial records, the Richard David Orton Papers, 1872-1924, document Orton’s activities as a sheriff and newspaper editor in Nacogdoches County, Texas. Correspondence concerns the Chronicle as well as social affairs, including instructions on conducting a census, while financial records consist of receipts and account statements.
