Biographical NoteGeorge Nokes was born in Navarro County, Texas in 1923. After graduating from high school in 1940, Nokes attended Baylor University, served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, and entered the University of Texas Law School in 1945. In 1946, he joined the state legislature for two terms before becoming a state senator. A proponent for veterans’ issues, in 1947 Nokes helped create the Texas Veterans Affairs Commission, an agency that provides assistance for veterans in obtaining federal benefits.
