Biographical Note

The son of John Nicholson and Annie Maria Hatch, Texas historian James C. Hatch married Melissa Hampton on November 17, 1883. The couple settled in Port Lavaca, Texas, where they raised their eight children. Later in life, Hatch moved with his wife to San Antonio in order to live near several of their daughters who lived there. He authored several articles on Texas history and his ancestors, including his grandfather Sylvanus Hatch and the Texas Revolution.

Scope and Contents

Composed of three volumes of correspondence, biographical sketches, genealogical materials, and Photostats of poetry, the James Hatch Papers, [ca. 1928-1929], document Hatch's research on Texas and family history. The first volume entitled "Captain Sylvanus Hatch," contains Photostats of poetry by Frances E. Swift and chronicles the experiences of Hatch's ancestor as well as the genealogy of the Hatch family from 1750 through 1924. The second volume contains correspondence concerning Mustang Gray and the Texas Rangers, while the third discusses the siege of the Alamo.
