Biographical NoteAfter being wounded in the foot at the Battle of Gettysburg, Confederate soldier M. A. Hubert (b. 1837) was sent a prison-hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. He remained there for two months until he returned to the Confederacy as part of a prisoner parole. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and ContentsThe M. A. Hubert Diary, 1863, chronicles Hubert’s experiences as a wounded Confederate prisoner in a Union prison hospital between July 27 and September 28, 1863. Hubert notes the atmosphere, particularly excitement about the possibility of going home. He also discusses his wound, the care he receives from the medical staff, and conditions within the hospital.
