Biographical Note

James Crewdson Turner received his bachelor of arts degree with honors in history in 1968 and a Ph.D. in 1975, both from Harvard University. As of 2011, he is a professor in the Department of History at the University of Notre Dame.

The James Crewdson Turner Thesis, 1968, solely consists of Turner's bachelor's thesis "The Origins of Populism: The Texas Experience." This thesis documents the rise and fall of the Populist movement in Texas between 1870 and 1898. Turner surveys the historiography of populism, discusses the structure of Texas politics in the late 19th century, and examines the Populists themselves and their rhetoric.
