Historical NoteCheney family patriarch William Cheney led a group of settlers from South Carolina to central Louisiana in 1811, establishing the town of Cheneyville. Members of the family remained in Louisiana and South Carolina through the Civil War and corresponded with each other. Cheney’s descendents include Laura M. Cole, Camilla S. Cheney, William C. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and ContentsThe Cheney Family Papers, 1829, 1833, 1923, 1934, consist of correspondence and essays, documenting the activities of members of the Cheney family over a century. The transcripts of two letters (1829, 1833) from Laura M. Cole to an unknown correspondent and her cousin Camilla S. Cheney, relate to her political views and social activities in antebellum South Carolina and Louisiana, including an account of a trip to the South Carolina coast and speculation on the possibility of civil war. Additionally, the papers include a homemade Christmas card given to William C. Cheney (1923) and essays by Sallie Cheney Cocks Brown (1934) concerning a childhood memory of farm life and her grandfather Colonel William Fenden Cheney’s encounter with a stampede.
