The Donald Davis Papers, 1950-2005, contain the administrative files of Davis while a
faculty member of the UT Graduate School of Library and Information Studies (GSLIS),
now the UT School of Information. Correspondence, memoranda, reports, photographs,
printed material, publications, programs, notes, newsletters, and other documents
relate to the planning of the 40th and 50th anniversaries of the GSLIS, especially
in regards to his involvement with the Graduate Studies Committee (GSC) and the
development of the program. The reports and memoranda about GSLIS, the faculty, and
the GSC emphasize the importance of faculty-student-administration relationships and
the school’s place within the university as well as within the field of library and
information science. |

Professor Emeritus Donald Gordon "Don" Davis, Jr.,
taught from 1971 until his retirement in 2006 at the University of Texas at Austin’s
Graduate School in Library and Information Science (GSLIS), renamed the School of
Information in 2002, and the Department of History. He earned a Ph.D. in Library
Science from the University of Illinois-Urbana in 1972 and a M.A.T.S. from Austin
Presbyterian Theological Seminary in 1996. Throughout his career, Davis actively
participated on numerous committees and round tables of library and historical
associations, including the American Library Association, the Association for the
Bibliography of History, Association for Library and Information Science Education,
Fellowship of Christian Librarians and Information Specialists, International
Federation of Library Associations and Institutions, and the Texas Library
Association, among others. Davis wrote The Association of
American Library Schools, 1915-1968: An Analytical History (1974) and
Bibliography and Chronology of Texas Library History,
1685-2000 (2002). From 1977 to 2005, he edited the Journal of Library History, now Libraries & the Cultural
Record, and co-authored 14 books.
