Biographical NoteJames Sample McCharen of Ardmore, Oklahoma, was the grandson of merchant William Riley Borroum of Greenville, South Carolina. He married Lola Goolsby and had several children: Elizabeth "Libby", a teacher who married Lon Harris and had a daughter Elaine; Geraldine, a graduate of Ardmore High School; Byron; Bess; Alyne; Ila; Jack; and James (b. 1896), who was a member of the American Legion. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and ContentsPapers of the James Sample McCharen family of Ardmore, Oklahoma, include also ledgers and receipts (1789-1821) of maternal grandfather and merchant William Riley Borroum of Greenville, South Carolina. The McCharen papers are arranged by family member and include daughter Elizabeth's teaching certificate (1913) and contract (1915), daughter Geraldine's high school diploma and scrapbook (1923), and son James's biographical dictionary of WWI soldiers The Oklahoma Spirit of '17 (1920) and American Legion certificate of membership (1973). Geraldine's scrapbook contains photographs, memorabilia, name cards, clippings, autographs, announcements, invitations, grade reports, and pencil drawings relating to her student life at Ardmore High School.
