Biographical Note

John Wiley Bryant, Democratic Congressman, was born in Lake Jackson, Texas in February 1947. In 1974, two years after receiving his law degree from Southern Methodist University, Bryant was elected to the Texas House of Representatives. A self-described populist, he quickly garnered a reputation for challenging leadership, calling for reform and championing labor. In 1983, Bryant won a seat in the U.S. Congress. He was selected by his peers in the House as one of the managers to conduct the impeachment proceedings of U.S. District Court Judge, Alcee Hastings. Due to House Speaker Jim Mattox's resignation and other events that weakened the Texas delegation, Bryant opted to stay in Congress instead of campaigning for attorney general of Texas. Bryant served on the House Judiciary Committee, Energy and Commerce Committee and Budget Committee. He represented Texas's' 5th Congressional district until 1996 when he lost his bid to win the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate. Bryant is married to Janet Watts of El Paso. The couple has three children.
