Biographical Note

Myron Arnold Wright was born April 9, 1911 in Blair, Oklahoma. He received a BS in Civil Engineering from Oklahoma State University in 1933. He began his career in the oil industry as a roustabout for the Carter Oil Company. He later worked for Standard Oil Company (New Jersey) for many years, eventually becoming the director and executive vice president in 1960. From 1966 to 1976, he served as the chairman and chief executive officer of Humble Oil & Refining Company, which became Exxon in 1972. He served as president of the Chamber of Commerce of the United States from 1966 to 1967 and was appointed to the Board of Governors of the U.S. Postal Service during these years. He was also the chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Cameron Iron Works from 1976 to 1989. He was married to Josephine Schmitz and had one daughter, Mary Judith (Wright) Reid. Wright died on November 27, 1992 in Houston, Texas.

The Correspondence series encompasses Wrights career from his role as chairman and CEO of Humble Oil & Refining Company to the years following his retirement from Cameron Iron Works.

The Business Activities series includes materials from Wright’s time at the Carter Oil Company, the Standard Oil Company (New Jersey), Humble Oil & Refining Company, and Exxon Company, U.S.A.

The Professional Organizations series contains information pertaining to Wright’s membership in the American Petroleum Institute, Independent Petroleum Association of America, International Petroleum Exposition and Congress, Inc., and other oil industry-related organizations.

The Board Memberships series contains materials relating to the various boards and councils in which Wright was involved, including the Chamber of Commerce of the United States, the Oklahoma State University, and the United States Postal Service Board of Governors.
