Historical Note

The Texas Folklore Society was founded in 1909 by Leonidas Warren Payne, Jr., who served as its first president, and John Avery Lomax, who served as its first secretary. On April 8, 1911, the organization held its first formal meeting in Austin at the University of Texas campus, the site of the society's first headquarters. From its inception the society has been not-for-profit; all income from dues and publication royalties goes to furthering the society's main purpose of preserving and presenting a wide variety of Texas folklore, including stories, songs, customs, and beliefs of the state's various ethnic, geographical, and occupational groups.

In 1923 J. Frank Dobie established the office of Secretary-Editor and was the first to serve in that position, which he held until 1943. Mody C. Boatright then became the acting Secretary-Editor for the next twenty years. In 1964 Wilson M. Hudson succeeded Boatright. Until 1971 the society maintained an office and archives on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin, although it was not a part of that institution. Francis Edward Abernethy of Stephen F. Austin State University became the Secretary-Editor in 1971, and the office was moved to that campus in Nacogdoches. In 2004 Abernethy turned over the reins to Ken Untiedt who held the position of Secretary-Editor for sixteen years. In April 2020, the membership agreed to move the home office to Granbury, Texas, with host institution Tarleton State University in full support. Frances B. Vick was then elected as the Society's first female Secretary-Editor.
